First responders are paramedics. Paramedics are members of the emergency medical team that arrive first on the scene to offer care and ensure patients remain in a stable condition when someone is sick, injured, or requires transfer to a hospital or other medical facility. During an emergency, paramedics must assess the situation, offer any necessary medical care, and then, if necessary, continue to provide care in an ambulance or other emergency vehicle to assist their patients in reaching the appropriate medical specialists who can help them further. As a result, paramedics must be physically competent of carrying patients to emergency vehicles as well as possessing medical and health care skills. Paramedics may treat a wide range of patients, from those who are merely having problems breathing to those who have been in a major car accident. In many circumstances, a person's life is on the line. Most paramedics drive or ride in an ambulance, but some work on helicopters and airplanes with critically ill patients. Some may also accompany fire trucks.
